Community-Based Research

I have contributed to research conducted by community-based groups that do not necessarily fall under the umbrella of ‘publications’ or ‘peer-reviewed’ journal articles. I have listed some of my work below and am keen on volunteering to help build capacity for research among community-based organizations.

#AreWeOkay Poll

I am a member of SG Mental Health Matters and have been the Co-Lead on the #AreWeOkay poll.

SG Mental Health Matters (SGMHM) #AreWeOkay poll ran from 26 March 2021 to 30 April 2021, and was intended to spark a conversation on mental health among Singaporeans amid the pandemic. This poll was launched on OPPi, an AI-powered crowdsourcing platform with proprietary analytic and statistical capabilities and involved a series of demographic questions and statements to which participants could respond to, including topics on perceptions of mental healthcare, vulnerable communities, COVID-19 on mental health, and mental health and society. Our findings has provided deeper insight into issues of access, affordability, and quality of mental healthcare in Singapore one year into the COVID-19 pandemic, while inspecting the long-term impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, our findings suggest a need to further support and address the pressing concern surrounding mental health more holistically.

Singapore LGBT Law

I assisted the team at Singapore LGBT Law in co-authoring their survey report on legal arrangements for LGBT couples & families in Singapore.

Singapore LGBT Law ran a survey on LGBT Families and Couples in Singapore (“LGBT Families”) in 2020, in order to find out people’s level of awareness of the Same But Different guidebook and to what extent they have used the guidebook. For the first time ever in Singapore, the survey also polled people to find out what stages they are in their relationship, in relation to proactively creating legal protections for their relationship.

The Greenhouse Community Survey

I assisted the team at The Greenhouse Community Services Limited on developing and analyzing The Greenhouse Community Survey conducted in 2019.

The Greenhouse is a substance addiction recovery centre for marginalised communities in Singapore who find it hard to seek help out of shame or fear of discrimination. This survey was conducted in order to understand drug use within the GBQ male community better.

This survey was developed in consultation with Action for AIDS, Lifeline, Oogachaga, SMART Recovery and GBQ-friendly social workers and public health professionals.
